Is it a bizarre kind of backwards racism or shame or embarrassment that compels me to turn down the volume on my stereo when I'm listening rap and get into a more populated area.

These are both signs you don't want to be seen as the archetypal white-guy-who-listens-to-hip-hop, the one who says to a black co-worker that he "gets it," the one who's "down." It's an image worth avoiding.
