Some Rare Film Commentary

Last night I had the pleasure of seeing what I believe to be one of the best movies of the year (along with Paprika and Grindhaus) (Second Parenthetical: this fall promises to have a lot of good movies as well), Once. It is a charming and bittersweet story about two people making music and getting dangerously close to falling in love. Or maybe they do. The understated nature of their relationship is one of the movie's high points, along with the songs they sing. Often there were moments where a lesser movie would have resorted to cloying bullshit, but this movie nimbly sidestepped those, favoring and unrequited longing and melancholy. There were a few moments where it fell into cliche, but those deviations into formula were not enough to make me like it any less.

So I urge you to see this. It is simple, charming and incredibly good.

Don't be deceived by the trailer.
